THE GREEN TREND
The ‘green trend’ has sparked a plethora of product ranges claiming to be ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ – resulting in an overwhelming choice for the consumer. But with no legal definition for what constitutes a ‘natural’ or organic’ product, the cosmetic industry has become largely self-regulated.
OUR BANNED LIST
Our choice to ban certain ingredients from our products is driven by research in the public domain about known toxic ingredients commonly used in cosmetics that cause ill health or may even be carcinogenic. Some of the harmful effects include breast cancer, heart disease, birth defects, memory loss, depression and hormone imbalance. Scientific research has not always been able to conclusively link the cause of disease to these ingredients because of restricted animal testing and no studies have yet been conducted on the effects of prolonged exposure or accumulated use.
Other ingredients we have banned, may be harmful to other life forms and the environment. These are typically non-biodegradable ingredients that persist down the food chain and may end up in our water supplies and our oceans, harming birds, fish and animals.
Since the average woman is reported to use up to ten different cosmetic products a day on her body, it is the cumulative effect of absorbing these harmful ingredients over time that we are concerned about.
While our banned ingredient policy is guided and informed by the most stringent health and safety regulations as prescribed by the European Union, other ingredients with questionable links to illness have also been excluded as our personal choice to be cautious.
